Christmas Ball – 7.6cm

The lacquerware Christmas Balls and Decorative Hearts are made from recycled paper and hand-painted using low tech paint brushes!

This design is from an original painting of Damien’s country, Mt. Liebig, west of Papunya. Damien’s great grandfather and his family are travelling through the desert towards Kintore, collecting food. In the bottom right hand corner the sun is setting over a hillside. The family stops to camp at different places along the way. The red concentric circles are dry rock holes, and the blue and white concentric circles represent rock holes that are filled with clean water, that flows on into the creek. The red stripes coming out of the centre of the right hand side of the painting lead to one of these waterholes these are the tracks of the family walking through the sand. In this painting you can also see spinifex bushes (the yellow star-like symbols), and dry claypans with cracks in the earth.

Better World Arts

Initially, we worked with traditional handicrafts. In 1996 we invited Aboriginal artists to join our projects and soon after decided to focus on the Aboriginal art side of the projects and left the normal handicrafts to others like Oxfam.

We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees). More recently we have started working with China, making bone China and silk ties.

We unite the traditional handicrafts produced by cultures steeped in artisanal traditions with artwork from Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities.  More lately we have started working with non-indigenous Australian artists that represent quintessential Australian theme.
